Sheepadoodles FAQs

Here's a quick guide to all you need to know about this amazing dog breed.

If you’ve been looking for a dog for your growing Australian family, you’ve probably seen a growth in the number of breeders offering Sheepadoodle puppies for sale. This lively, fun-loving cross breed of dog has increased in popularity in recent years, quickly establishing itself as a perfect dog for kids and families. But what should you know about them before you buy one?

How big do Sheepadoodles get?

The Sheepadoodle is a cross breed between a Poodle and an Old English Sheepdog. Because it is a mixed breed, their size can vary greatly based on the size of the respective parents, the gender of the dog, and the generation of Sheepadoodle the puppy belongs to.

So you’re never quite sure what to expect.

The three Sheepadoodle sizes that are commonly referred to by breeders are micro Sheepadoodle, mini Sheepadoodle, and standard Sheepadoodle.

A full-grown micro Sheepadoodle will be around 15-16 inches tall and weigh less than 25 pounds. The mini Sheepadoodle weighs 25–50 pounds and is 17–18 inches tall. The standard Sheepadoodle, which is the most common, weighs 50–85 pounds and is 19–24 inches tall. Keep in mind that they can get way bigger, weighing more than 100 pounds!

Can Sheepadoodles be left alone?

Many dogs have strong attachments to their owners, but breeds like the Sheepadoodle can have a much stronger dependency on their owners.

They are a very sociable breed of dog; they get very connected to their family and want to be with them all the time. Having said that, some of them can develop separation anxiety, depression, and destructive behaviour if their owners let them spend the majority of their time alone. It may encourage destructive behaviours, including chewing, excessive barking, panting, shaking, and hyperactivity. Dogs suffering from anxiety may also attempt to flee the house or may attempt to prevent their owners from leaving.

If you want a Sheepadoodle but are regularly away for work or any other reason, you will need to train your dog to be comfortable being left alone for a few hours at a time, as well as provide enough mental stimulation to prevent destruction.

When do Sheepadoodles stop growing?

Old English Sheepdogs reach their maximum height in about a year but take two or three years to reach their full weight, and Poodles take around 18 months to reach their full height and weight. So, on average, standard Sheepadoodles will mature in around two to two and a half years, while micro and mini Sheepadoodles may be done growing in one and a half years to two years.

Sheepadoodles take more time to grow and strengthen their bones, joints, and muscles to carry the massive build of full-grown dogs. While two years may seem like a long time for a puppy to grow, it is necessary so that everything can develop properly. If Sheepadoodles grow too fast, they may have joint problems and dysplasia, lowering their quality of life.

Are they hypoallergenic?

While no dog is fully hypoallergenic, there are ways to live with a Sheepadoodle. This type of dog is a hybrid between a Poodle and an Old English Sheepdog, with Poodles being hypoallergenic and the Old English Sheepdog not, resulting in an extremely low-shedding coat.

Because the Sheepadoodle has very low shedding, the allergy-causing dander that attaches to their fur does not get released into the air, carpets, or onto the floor as much as other shedding dogs. This can still be a good option for owners with less severe allergies.

Will my Sheepadoodle turn grey?

Sheepadoodle coats come in a variety of colours, and genetics always determine which one they will be. The main colours of a Sheepadoodle are black and white. They are also available in white and, in rare instances, grey.

Like many other doodles, a Sheepadoodle may and does change colour. This is especially apparent in Sheepadoddles, which have black and dark brown coats that gradually fade to grey and white as they mature. As they approach maturity, the fading usually happens between the ages of 6 and 12 months. It is caused by the G locus, a progressive greying gene found in both Poodles and Old English Sheepdogs.
